Sheikh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi var fram till nyligen verksam som föreläsare i Umayya-moskén i Damaskus och höll fredagspredikan i al-Hasan-moskén i Abu Rummaneh. För tre månader sedan avskedades han och blev belagd med talförbud p.g.a. sitt stöd till demonstrationerna och sin kritik mot regimen.
