In order to bring together the thoughts from Al-Ghazali and Miskawaih, the development of a child can be categorized into two phases:
1. Birth until the Age of Discernment (tamyiz)
The first and oldest faculty exists in man is the faculty of desire. This faculty is endowed for the purpose of the survival in this world. With regard to the cognitive or intellectual development, a child initially apprehends through the sensible spirit that functions through his/her five external senses (sense of touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing). The next stage is learning through the imaginative spirit which is responsible for storing the sensible and presenting them to the intellect whenever required. It retains the images of the sensory objects after they have disappeared.

2. The Age of Discernment (tamyiz) until Puberty (bulugh)
The faculty of anger and subsequently followed by the faculty of discernment (or intellect) exist when a child approaches the age of seven. At this level, the faculty of anger is needed to protect him/herself from any element that threatens the life and property. At higher stage, the faculty of discernment comes to enable a man to distinguish between good and bad. The logical aptitude begins to appear when he/she starts to discern the possibility of possible things and the impossibility of impossible things. The first sign of discernment is the presence of modesty in him/her, to feel ashamed of doing certain things. At this age, it is a gift from the Creator, that man begins to perceive and apprehend more than the world of the sensible, indicating the balance character trait and sound intellect, which will be possessed when entering the age of puberty.
