Enligt Shafi'i-skolan:

Att borsta tänderna bryter inte fastan, men man bör tänka på följande:

Att fastan bryts om man sväljer tandkräm eller om man sväljer saliv som blandats med tandkräm. Man bör därför skölja munnen med vatten efter tandborstningen och innan man sväljer. Fastan bryts inte av att man känner smaken av tandkräm om man vet att man sköljt munnen ordentligt.

Profeten, frid och välsignelser vare med honom, har sagt: ”Den fastandes andedräkt är mer väldoftande än mysk för Allah.” och majoriteten av våra lärda har därför sagt att det är orekommenderat att använda t.ex. siwak efter Dhuhr när man fastar.
